"Tornadoes helping Tornadoes"

Mount Carmel Area Athletic Alumni Association held its second annual Membership Meeting and Scholarship Awards Drawing on Wednesday, August 8th, at Mattucci’s Restaurant. Attending were alumni from across the country and students who applied for the scholarship awards drawing.

The Mount Carmel Area Athletic Alumni Association (MC4A) is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing scholarships for Mt. Carmel Area students who have participated in a sport or supported interscholastic athletic programs while attending Mount Carmel Area High School, and in doing so also establish a bond between graduates and current students.

Officers attending the MC4A Scholarship Awards were (left to right) Robert Colahan, Treasurer, Dan Ficca, President, Dick Bridy, Director, and Gene McGee, Secretary.  Attending but not in photo was Phil Gergen, Director

Dan Ficca, President, who presided over the meeting and awards ceremony, announced the election results for the Board of Directors. The Directors that were reelected to a two year term were: Dick Bridy, and Dr. Ron Grossman.  Outgoing Director Mary John, who chose not to run for another term, was acknowledged for her years of service.  Dan also brought the members up to date on the association’s website ( www.mc4a.org ), the Membership Directory, and the bi-annual Newsletter which is released every February and August.  After discussion, members decided to open up the “members only” page of the website to the public. This change will soon be made to our website.

Gene McGee, secretary and membership chairman, gave a special acknowledgement of appreciation to Director Phil Gergen, who was very instrumental in getting MC4A off the ground through his work of compiling names and addresses of many MCA alumni.

Robert Colahan, Treasurer, gave an up-to-date financial report and noted that the number of members is growing daily.

Gene McGee explained the membership drive’s efforts to get current mailing addresses of alumni is ongoing.  Over 6,000 letters and applications were sent out to alumni this spring.

Dan gave the membership totals for 2006 and this year’s current stats.  He noted that over 450 letters were sent out to parents of MCA students, who graduated in 2004 through 2006, informing them about the MC4A scholarships.  He also made special note that MC4A monthly meeting dates will be changed to the second Tuesday of each month at his house.  The next monthly meeting will be Tuesday, September 11th at 7 P.M.

Following the meeting, the Scholarship Awards Drawing was held, in which four $1,000 scholarships were given out to the lucky winners of a lottery style drawing. The awards ceremony was hosted by Dan Ficca along with the other officers.  Director Dick Bridy, who flew in from California to take part, welcomed the applicants and their parents and noted that 34 students had applied for the awards.  This number was up by 25% from last year.
